Rwandan Giants Hope to Qualify for CAF Competition Stages


August 9, 2025, the clubs representing Rwanda in the CAF competitions, APR FC and Rayon Sports FC, now know their opponents. In the CAF Champions League, APR FC will face Egypt's Pyramids FC, while Rayon Sports will play against Singida Black Stars from Tanzania.


A large number of fans were shocked to learn that APR FC will face Pyramids FC again. This will be the third encounter between the two teams in the CAF Champions League, with previous games all ending in favor of the Egyptian side.


Uwahozeho Jesus, a media studies student at Mount Kigali University, shared his opinion on the APR FC vs. Pyramids match: “First of all, the Egyptian league is stronger than ours. Those clubs have some of the best players on the continent, and don’t forget that Pyramids are the defending champions of the CAF Champions League. APR FC may try their best to use home advantage, but in my opinion, they cannot overcome Pyramids.”


However, one of APR FC's key leader, Gen Mubarak Muganga, shared a confident message: “Allow me to say this: yes, the draw for us is neither good nor bad. What I can assure you is that our club will eliminate Pyramids FC.”


On the other side, Rayon Sports fans are somewhat pleased with drawing Singida Black Stars, as they believe the Tanzanian team is not as strong as Pyramids. Rayon Sports will face Singida in the CAF Confederation Cup.


In a recent friendly match, Rayon Sports played against Tanzanian champions Young Africans (Yanga). The game ended in a 3-1 victory for the Tanzanian side.


In other preparation news, APR FC organized a pre-season tournament named "Inkera Y’Abahizi," which included several clubs, including international teams. APR FC won their first game 2-0 against Zambia's Power Dynamos but was defeated in the second game by AS Kigali in a penalty shootout.


Historically, Rwandan clubs have struggled in CAF competitions. Rayon Sports remains the only Rwandan team to have reached the group stages and advanced to the quarter-finals, a feat they achieved in the CAF Confederation Cup.


In a recent 2025 club ranking released by CAF, which listed 75 teams, neither Rayon Sports nor APR FC featured.


Both clubs are now preparing intensively for their upcoming challenges by signing new players they believe will help them achieve their goal of qualifying for the group stages.
