Impacts of Foreigner ballers to Rwanda Premier League

The 2025-2026 league season is scheduled to begin on Friday, 12 September 2025. CAF competitions first leg preliminary round for clubs standing for Rwanda, will start on Saturday, 20 September 2025, Rayon Sports against Singida black stars at Kigali Pele stadium in CAF confederations cup. On other hand APR FC’s game against Pyramids FC in CAF champions league will be played on 1St October 2025.
Different clubs signed players
and coaches to boost their squad for upcoming season, both local and
international players. By checking out the foreigner players who are joining
Rwanda premier league, Rayon sports has signed 9 new international players
while APR FC signed three.
Rayon sport is considered as the
club which is mostly using big number of foreigner players as the culture of
their club.
What are the challenges that are brought
by foreigner players?
Herve Gahunzire, former
journalist at Imanzi media house shared opinion, “It is a big loss, how it comes to join amateur
league while you are a best player? They are here to chase money because clubs
is paying very well.” They bring no challenge. He added.
Student at Mount Kigali
University, Jesus Uwahozeho has different look “Normal our league is on low level of football,
if Rwandan ballers play it alone there is nothing new we can see. But if
professional international players joins the league, you can easily verify the
difference and impact.”
There are some foreigner players
who not only joined the league, but they left a land mark in Rwandan football. List
below shows one of the international ballers who showed there impacts:
1. Pierrot Kwizera (Burundi), Rayon Sports
(mid-2010s)
A cult-hero playmaker whose vision and set-pieces lit up the league. Won
back-to-back “Player of the Year” awards and became the standard for creative
midfielders in Rwanda.
2. Michael Sarpong (Ghana), Rayon Sports
(2018-2020)
Prolific spearhead of Rayon’s 2018/19 title run; widely reported as the club’s
top scorer that season and the match-winner in big games.
3. Ismaïla Diarra (Mali), Rayon Sports
(2016-2017)
A big-game striker who delivered silverware scored the crucial winner as Rayon
lifted the 2016 Peace Cup, and produced key goal bursts in the league.
4. Héritier Luvumbu (DR Congo), Rayon
Sports (2023-2024)
A talismanic left-footer whose creativity and dead balls transformed matches.
His high-impact spell ended abruptly amid a widely covered six-month FERWAFA
suspension and a mutual separation with the club. Legacy-wise, he raised
attacking standards and match-day excitement.
5. Jules Ulimwengu (Burundi), Rayon Sports
(2019)
A clutch finisher remembered for decisive strikes, most notably scoring as
Rayon clinched the 2018/19 championship.
6. Davis Kasirye (Uganda), Rayon Sports
(2016)
Etched into derby folklore with a famous hat-trick in the 4–0 rout of APR, one
of the defining Rayon vs APR moments of the era.
7. Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana (Burundi),
Rayon Sports (2018)
Key to Rayon’s historic 2018 continental run, scored in the match that sealed a
CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final berth, the furthest a Rwandan club had gone
at the time.
8. Chiukepo Msowoya (Malawi), APR FC
(2009/10)
A marquee foreign signing who powered APR’s domestic treble in 2009/10 before
earning a move to Orlando Pirates, proof that success in Rwanda can springboard
regional careers.
9. Victor Nyirenda (Malawi), APR FC (2010)
Part of APR’s Malawian strike force that terrorized defenses; remembered for
multi-goal outings in heavy wins during APR’s dominant spell.
10. Kipson Atuheire (Uganda), Police FC / AS
Kigali / SC Kiyovu (2010s)
A long-serving Ugandan forward whose consistency made him a go-to import;
delivered decisive goals for Police and remained productive across several
Rwandan clubs.
11. Leandre Willy Essomba Onana (Cameroon),
Rayon sport (2022-2023)Won peace cup with Rayon sports and become
top scorer with 16 goals. After move to Simba sc, proof that success in Rwanda
can springboard regional careers.
