How Rwandan Students Combine Education and Sports

 By Uwineza Roger | Sports

Balancing academics and sports has become a common challenge among many Rwandan students. With the growing importance of both education and physical activity, students are learning to manage their time wisely to excel in both areas.

Across schools and universities, sports such as football, basketball, and athletics have become part of students’ daily routines. Many institutions now encourage sports participation through organized training sessions and inter-school competitions.

However, combining the two is not always easy. Some students struggle to maintain good academic performance due to demanding training sessions, while others find that sports help them stay focused and disciplined in their studies.

Eric Tuyishime well know as “Thawi”, is studying media studies at Mount Kigali and currently playing cricket, “You know it’s sports, bro  we can play a morning match at Gahanga Stadium, then have another one in the afternoon at IPRC, either a training match or an official game.

So, in the morning, the time runs from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and in the afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

That’s why it becomes hard for me to attend school. The main challenge is that it’s something very demanding, and it also requires time for studying, bro.”

Giselle Ishimwe who is currently coming from Malaysia in the tournament, she has also started her class in media studies,

“It’s actually because when someone studies in the evening, it becomes easier  for example, on my side, I spend the whole day on the field doing training. After that, I go home, get ready, and then attend class. When we have morning training, I prepare and come to class in the evening at 8 p.m., bringing extra clothes to change after training. When the lessons are over, I get ready again for the next day.”

“When we have a tournament here in the “country, we request permission from the school, but if there is a class test, you can still attend and do it it depends on the situation. If the tournament is outside the country, you inform the school authorities in advance so they can know how to handle your marks and academic matters.” She added.

In the end, Rwandan students continue to prove that education and sports can go hand in hand, shaping well rounded individuals who are both mentally and physically strong.
